The Texas Scholar program is coordinated by Camp Fire USA West Texas Council in cooperation with MISD and Midland Christian School. Texas Scholars is a different program from the Midland College Legacy Scholarship program. They both require community service, but two different forms are required. The program"s mission is to encourage all secondary students to enroll in and complete challenging course work. This coupled with 20 hours of volunteer community experience, enables them to better compete in the highly technological global economy of the 21st century. To be a Texas Scholar a student must have a 2.75 GPA on a 6.0 scale, and graduate on the Recommended or Distinguished plan plus have 20 hours of community service at any volunteer agency. A student can start accumulating his/her 20 hours of Texas Scholars community service their freshman year and seniors MUST turn in their hours by February 18, 2011. Texas Scholar students are recognized at a Texas Scholar Banquet held each year. Also, graduating seniors can purchase a white cord, which signifies a Texas Scholar graduate, to wear at graduation. | |
